The Lottery Flower Cushion by Jeannette Austen

Why the lottery flower cushion, because the end result will depend upon how you label each colour. The pattern is made up of  25 flower granny squares, each square uses 3 different colours. To create your personalised cushion, choose 8 different colours and label them A – H, you will need 1 extra ball of colour for the edging, either choose 1 of the same colours or  a contrasting colour, then  follow the grid for the colour combinations. Note that no two squares contain the same colours. Have fun.

Do not turn the work when making the squares.                                          Dc = Double Chain

Flower Square

With first colour Ch 4 join with sl st to make a loop.

Row 1: Ch 4 (count as dc, & 1 sc), then (dc, 1 sc) x 7. Join with sl st into 3rd loop of ch 4. So, 8 (dc, 1 sc) in all.

It should look like this:

Break of colour & sl st next colour into any sp.

Row 2: Sc, 3 dc, sc into same sp to create first petal. Then continue around each sp with sc, 3 dc, sc to create 8 petals. Join with sl st to 1st sc at base of 1st petal. Do not break off yarn.

It should now look like this:

Row 3: We are now going to work at the back of the petals we have just made, so, ch 3, now sl st onto the 2sc at the beginning of the next petal, you are looking for the V shape above the stem we made earlier.

It looks like this:

Now, ch 4, sl st onto next V. Continue around until you have completed all 8 petals. Sl st to base of first sc. It should now look like this on the back: note you now have 8 chain loops to attach the next layer of petals onto.

Row 4: Continuing to work at the back, sc, 5 dc, sc onto each of the loops you have just made on row 3 to create the next row of petals. Sl st onto first sc. Break off yarn.

Row 5: With next colour and still working from behind, sl st into the V of second row of petals. Ch 3 (counts as dc), 2 dc into same V st, 1 sc. Then in next V, 3 dc, 1 sc, 3 dc, 1sc, this turns the corner. Into next V, 3 dc, 1 sc, continue around the flower with 3 dc, 1 sc, 3 dc, 1 sc to turn the corner. Then into next V, 3 dc, 1 sc, join with a sl st to top of ch 3. Do not break off yarn. Nearly done, looking cute.

Row 6: Sc into every st around the square, sl st to join, and that's it folks the first flower complete. Sew in the ends.

Granny square for back

All these squares are worked in a single colour to correspond with the colour on the front. You will make 3 of each colour plus 1, so 25 in all.

With first colour Ch 4 join with sl st to make a loop.
Row 1: as for row 1 of flower, do not break off yarn.

Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as dc) into same sp dc2, sc, then dc3 into next sp, sc (Single cluster). Continue all the way around. So 1 cluster in each space, 8 clusters in all.

Row 3: Ch3 (counts as dc), dc2 into same sp, sc. Dc3 into next sp, sc, into same sp, dc3, sc, to make a corner (double cluster). Then 3dc into next sp, sc (single cluster). Then double cluster into next sp, single cluster into next sp, all the way around. This makes the square. 4 single clusters and 4 double clusters.

Row 4: Sc into every st all the way round, sl st, break off yarn. Sew in ends to finish the square.

To make up. Sac st all the squares together according to chart. Then sc 2 rows around the outside of the front and back panel with colour of your choice. Put back and front together with wrong side facing, sac st around 3 sides, insert the cushion and sac st the 4th edge. Your cushion is now complete.
